it will be hard but you see people like joe manchin willing to work on some things. he's a touchstone for a lot of democrats who look to people who are supporters of gun rights. i'm wontderring when you have the people who do push back on certain parts of it and that does include joe manchin and people like harry reid who basically has said he's not superulatively supportive of the president's plan. let's put it that way. i'm wondering, ryan is this because they live in those gun states, they fear the nra? tell us about the difficulties of getting some people like harry reid on board. >> right. it's because they understand the politics of guns. the problem for gun control advocates has never been broad popularity. a majority of people generally support gun control. they support an assault weapons ban. you showed those polls. there's broad support for these kinds of things. the problem isn't intensity. people who support an assault weapons ban don't -- in the past have not voted on their support of an assault weapons ban. you know, they would say that, yes, given the choice between having a ban

go ahead and bother. you mean to tell me we can't even go back to where we were? senator joe manchin of west virginia went on cnn to talk about bipartisanship yesterday. he ended up taking a totally partisan stance on an assault weapons ban. >> just get a yes or no possibly. an assault weapons stand alone ban. >> a assault weapons ban, on just guns alone will not in the political reality that we have today will not go anywhere. it has to be comprehensive, candy. >> let's have an up or down vote on that. i'm not so sure than. senator manchin is shutting down the debate before it's even started. it looks like congress might not have the courage to act on anything. so today the president talked about his alternatives. >> i'm confident that there are some steps we can take that don't require legislation and that are within my authority as president. >> and here is the level headed and bipartisan response. representative steve stockman is threatening to impeach the president of the united states if there is any new gun control laws out there. his official website says "come and take it,"

agreement there joe manchin, as you know, democratic senator from west virginia, conservative, bucked his party, also very strong, gets an a from the nra, said i don't think an assault weapons ban can pass unless it's part of a larger package. so he doesn't think as a stand-alone, congress will pass an assault weapons ban. now, david keane said right now, an assault weapons ban could not pass. the nra does have a lot of supporters. keane made the point when the president gets on the bully pull pits, he can be effective. people took it right here, right now, here is what i see. the white house said we are going to go out and really pitch this, so we will -- we will fee they do right now, you see the same schisms of what you have there in terms of why an assault weapons ban according to, certainly the nra, won't work. >> let me just ask you, because the president pretty busy also doing cabinet building. the latest nominee is jack lew and i am wondering how is that one really being received? >> well, depends on -- i think we have to take sort of all -- the 50,000-foot view from these -- for

of the shooting, we saw some key moderate democratic lawmakers like joe manchin come out and say he was open to this conversation. he was open to having a debate about gun control, considering some of these measures. it's unclear whether that's going to be dissipate at all now as we've had more time elapse since the shooting and that emotional momentum may have slowed a little bit. we also see the nra. they're very powerful. still powerful. and they have a lot of allies in congress, not just among the republicans, but also with some democrats. the new senator from north dakota who was out over the weekend certainly doesn't seem open to a lot of these proposals. so it's going to be a legislative challenge for the white house to push forward whatever proposals they develop and get those passed in congress. >> are there people in the house and senate who have sort of cred on both sides they think they can use. we have heard a number of gun owners, people who have ratings with the nra saying things like you don't need an assault weapon to go duck hunting. >> you know, there are some. i think we'

joe manchin come on. a very proud member of the nra. with an "a" rating, said it's time for us and the nra to look at ourselves and make shchanome changes. a lot of people thought that might open up a larger discussion. that hasn't necessarily happened. we haven't seen a lot of people line up behind joe manchin to look at the nra and say hey, we need to moderate ourselves or we need to be at least open to some change. so do you think at this moment that this time is different, or has the moment passed in some ways? >> you know, i think we are living in a time when there is slightly a culture of instant amnesia where -- and maybe it's to do with the amount of media we have access to. it's like we gorge ourselves on a story, and then after a few days, it's gone. and that happens, unfortunately, at a policy level but also from a viewer level. and so the urgency seems so intense at the time. and it certainly did -- i was up in newtown for four days at the time, and it seemed like the whole country was focused on this. you had not just manchin, you had senator warner come out and sp
